# Claim your portal address

This article explains how to claim the web address your customers use to start a return.

## Claim the address

You need to be the store's Owner or an Admin to do this.

1. In your Shopify admin, open Apps → ReverseSignal, then open **Settings**.
2. Under **Portal address**, enter a **Portal hostname** you own, for example `returns.yourstore.com`.
3. Click **Save address**.
4. Point the address's DNS to ReverseSignal. The address won't work until you do. DNS is the setting, kept by the company that manages your domain, that tells browsers where an address leads.

## What your customers do there

Your customers open this address and enter their order number and the email address from their order confirmation. They don't need an account or a password.

## Why a subdomain, not a bare domain

Use a subdomain such as `returns.yourstore.com`, not your main domain `yourstore.com`, so your storefront keeps working. If you enter a bare domain, the field shows: "Use a subdomain, like returns.acme.com. A top-level domain can't be used."

## If the address is already in use

Each address can belong to only one store. If another store has already claimed it, the field shows: "That address is already in use by another store." Pick a different subdomain and try again.

## Changing the address later

Changing the address stops the old one working right away. Customers using the old address, and any links or emails quoting it, won't reach your portal anymore.

1. In **Settings**, click **Change address**.
2. Enter the new hostname and click **Save address**, or click **Cancel** to keep the current one.
3. Point the new address's DNS to ReverseSignal.
4. Update any links or emails still using the old address.

## When it starts working

Claiming the address is the first step. Your customers will reach it only once its DNS points to ReverseSignal. The app can't check your DNS, so it never says the address is working. It shows: "Your customers will reach this address once its DNS points to ReverseSignal."
